About cancer patient statistics

Statistics of cancer patients admitted to Tsukuba Medical Center Hospital in 2022, disease-specific prognosis surveys and treatment methods from May 1 when the Ibaraki Regional Cancer Center was established in our hospital to December 1999, and 5-year survival rates for 2022 major cancers.
*Statistics are created by the Medical Information Management Division based on the materials of the "Regional Cancer Registry" reported to Ibaraki Prefecture and the "In-Hospital Cancer Registry" required by regional cancer treatment center hospitals.

Prognosis by clinical stage at initial treatment and initial treatment method

Table 2PDFshows the prognosis and treatment methods by site and clinical stage for inpatients from May 1999, 5 (Cancer Center opened) to December 12, 2022.
*The ICD-10 classification is used for classification by site, and the TNM classification is used for stage classification.(*) in the TNM classification at the time of initial treatment indicates recurrent cases at the first visit to our hospital, and (-) indicates unclassified. The prognosis was classified into survival, death from cancer, and death from other causes.Treatment methods were classified into surgical treatment, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, symptomatic/palliative care, examination, and others.Surgical treatment includes endoscopic treatment, thoracoscopic and laparoscopic surgery.Radiation therapy includes radiation therapy alone and chemotherapy in combination.Chemotherapy includes hormone therapy and immunotherapy in addition to anticancer drug therapy.Items of examination include those who were hospitalized for the purpose of examination but were not treated.

Table 3PDFsummarizes the prognosis and treatment of major diseases. The number of inpatients at the cancer center from May 1999 to December 5 was 2022, including 12 survivors, 22,021 cancer deaths, and 13,832 other causes. If death cannot be confirmed, the case is counted as a survivor.
Regarding the number of patients by site, the lungs had the highest number of patients at 3,698, followed by the large intestine (colon + rectum) at 3,153, breasts at 3,117, stomach at 2,544, and prostate at 2,509. This continued to be an increasing trend in the large intestine (colon + rectum), breast, and prostate. Initial treatment methods included surgical treatment for 12,541 patients, radiation therapy for 2,227 patients, drug therapy for 2,583 patients, symptomatic treatment/palliative care for 3,656 patients, testing for 965 patients, and other treatments for 49 patients.

*Statistics are for inpatients and do not include outpatients only.

5-year survival rate

We calculated the 1999-year survival rate (Kaplan-Meier method) by site and clinical stage for patients admitted to our cancer center since May 5, when Tsukuba Medical Center Hospital Ibaraki Regional Cancer Center opened. I will report it. The 5-year survival rate was determined by stage classification based on the degree of cancer progression at the start of treatment, based on data from the cancer department and palliative medicine department in charge of each organ. ※BookThe data is aggregated and calculated based on patient information as of the end of December 2022.

  • Colorectal cancer is a statistic that combines colon cancer and rectal cancer.
  • Statistics refer to inpatients and do not include outpatients only.
  • The 5-year survival rate is summarized based on the "cancer registry" reported to Ibaraki Prefecture.
  • Terminally ill patients who were referred to the palliative care ward by other medical institutions are also included in these statistics.

In all cancers, the prognosis was worse as the disease stage at the time of initial diagnosis progressed.Once again, you can see the importance of early detection through prevention and cancer screening.

cancer surgery statistics

Table 5PDFshows the number of surgeries performed as part of cancer treatment at our hospital by site and type.
*Surgery includes endoscopic resection such as gastric ESD/EMR and colonic EMR.
By site, 134 cases were in the large intestine, 139 cases in the bladder, 132 cases in the breast, 80 cases in the stomach, 77 cases in the lungs, and 70 cases in the uterus. The total number of cases was 745, which is 2021 fewer cases than in 19.
