Efforts of the Radiation Oncology Department
A new radiation therapy equipment (linac) will be in operation in October 2023!
At our hospital, we perform three-dimensional radiation therapy using a linac.
Radiation therapy technology has advanced dramatically in recent years, making it possible to perform complex irradiation, increasing efficacy against tumors and reducing adverse events. At our clinic, we are devising irradiation methods and trying to achieve more effective irradiation. We are also actively working on stereotactic radiotherapy called pinpoint irradiation.
Radiation therapy is effective not only for curative treatment but also for palliative treatment.Radiation therapy plays an important role in cancer treatment, but we believe that it is most important to combine it with surgery and drug therapy. In cooperation with other departments, we try to provide treatment at the appropriate timing.
In addition, the Tsukuba area is surrounded by facilities that can perform special treatments such as proton therapy and brachytherapy. We have a system in place to make referrals to these facilities whenever necessary.
A word to patients
Radiation therapy tends to be considered scary in Japan, perhaps because of the image of the atomic bomb.
In the first place, the reason why cancer centers were established in Europe and the United States was because it was difficult to set up a large number of expensive radiotherapy facilities, so organizations called cancer centers were created.
There are many misconceptions about radiation therapy, such as hair loss, feeling sick, and fatigue.
At our clinic, we try to explain what kind of effect and what kind of disorder will occur before treatment.
For cancer treatment, it is almost understood which of surgery, chemotherapy (anti-cancer drugs) or radiotherapy is the best, depending on the type and degree of progression.I would like to propose the most preferable treatment method for patients while cooperating with surgery and internal medicine.
