Initiatives in Urology

As our hospital is the Ibaraki Regional Cancer Center and a regional cancer treatment cooperation base hospital, we mainly treat urological cancer. The main diseases are prostate cancer, urothelial cancer (renal pelvic ureter cancer/bladder cancer), and kidney cancer, but testicular cancer, penile cancer, adrenal gland, and retroperitoneal tumor are also targets of urology. Our hospital is a regional medical support hospital, and we value hospital-clinic cooperation. For this reason, most of the patients who visit urology departments are referred by physicians who practice in the area, residents' medical examinations, and complete medical examinations. In particular, the number of patients with prostate cancer is rapidly increasing due to the widespread use of the tumor marker PSA (prostate-specific antigen).A diagnostic method for prostate cancer has been established, in which PSA screening is followed by prostate biopsy for definitive diagnosis.Bladder cancer is often characterized by hematuria, and asymptomatic gross hematuria is the first suspected cancer of the urinary tract.Kidney cancer is less often detected by the classic symptoms of hematuria, abdominal tumors, and abdominal pain, and is more often discovered incidentally on abdominal ultrasound or CT scan. Since 2008, we have also been working on laparoscopic surgery for the treatment of renal cancer and renal pelvic and ureteral cancer.

In addition to malignant diseases, we also treat urinary calculi, benign prostatic hyperplasia, and urinary tract infections. In 2008, we began full-scale treatment of urinary tract stones. We have newly installed a laser device for endoscopic lithotripsy.I also started laser treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia. We currently do not perform Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL).

A word to patients

Good treatment results can be obtained by diagnosing and treating cancer early. For prostate cancer, it is important to measure a tumor marker called PSA (prostate-specific antigen) at an early stage when there are no symptoms. If you are a man over the age of XNUMX, you should actively take a PSA test during a health checkup.
