Medical Technology Department

Clinical laboratory

Business contents

The duties of clinical laboratory technologists are wide-ranging.
In our department, we mainly

  • Blood collection (common task for all departments)
  • Clinical Laboratory Division (Biochemistry, Immunology, Serum, Hematology, General, Microbiology, Blood Transfusion)
  • Physiological examination department (cardiovascular physiology, respiratory physiology, neurophysiology, ultrasonography)
  • Pathological examination department (histopathological diagnosis, cytology, autopsy)
  • Health checkup department (business common to all departments)

Operated by the above divisions.
We will introduce the main business contents.

blood collection

Hospital ward blood collection/outpatient blood collection

In our department, we collect blood for outpatients and wards.
A clinical laboratory technologist collects blood in the outpatient blood collection room.
More than 80% of the blood samples are taken before the examination, and the results are reported promptly after the blood samples are taken.
We also collect blood from inpatients other than critical care wards and pediatric wards.
This is a common task for engineers in all departments.

Laboratory test department

Biochemical test/immune serological test

Blood components such as serum and plasma are used to examine the functions of various organs, metabolic functions, immune functions, and disease markers. We report within 1 hour for outpatient pre-examination tests and within 30 minutes for requests from critical care centers.

Blood test

A blood test checks red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, hemoglobin, etc.We use a microscope to observe the presence of anemia and inflammation, and to detect abnormalities and changes in cell morphology, which can lead to the discovery of blood diseases such as leukemia.
In addition, we perform a test of the components necessary for blood to clot (coagulation test), which is useful for searching for congenital diseases that make it difficult for blood to clot, and for controlling the amount of antithrombotic drugs.

General inspection

Urine, feces, and body fluids other than blood (ascites, cerebrospinal fluid, etc.) are examined.
Urinalysis is useful for diagnosing kidney disease, diabetes, and urinary tract infections.
In the stool test, an occult blood test is mainly performed to check for gastrointestinal bleeding.
Cerebrospinal fluid examination is useful for diagnosing meningitis, encephalitis, etc. by examining the number of cells and protein components.

Microbial test

In microbiological testing, various specimens (blood, sputum, urine, stool, pus, spinal fluid, pleural fluid, ascites, mucus, etc.) are cultured and fully automated genetic analyzers are used to detect a wide variety of viruses, including those that cause infectious diseases. Identify pathogenic microorganisms and help select treatment methods.
As a member of the infection control team, the technologist in charge also works to prevent hospital-acquired infections.

Blood transfusion test

Using a product management system, we manage blood products 24 hours a day to ensure safe blood transfusions, and conduct blood type tests and irregular antibody screening tests.

Physiological examination department

*Details of main inspections, precautions, and required time

cardiovascular physiology

Resting 12-lead ECG

A test that records the electrical signals of the heart.Check for cardiac conditions such as arrhythmia and myocardial infarction.
Electrodes are attached to the chest, wrists and ankles, and the patient is asked to lie down on the bed and rest quietly.
Please let us know if you have a dialysis shunt.
Required time 5-10 minutes

Exercise electrocardiogram (treadmill exercise test)

Ischemic diseases such as angina pectoris are examined by exercising to put stress on the heart and observing changes in the electrocardiogram. An electrocardiogram will be attached to your chest and you will be asked to walk briskly on the treadmill, so please wear comfortable clothes and exercise shoes.
You may bring your own shoes. Please let us know if you have difficulty walking fast.
Required time 20-30 minutes

24-hour ECG (Holter ECG)

A 24-hour electrocardiogram is recorded by attaching electrodes to the chest and attaching a recorder.
It is useful for diagnosing arrhythmia and ischemic heart disease.
You will be required to visit the hospital for two days, the day you attach the brace and the day you remove it.You cannot take a bath or shower on the day of installation.
Please come to the hospital in clothes that allow you to be naked only on the upper body.Do not wear dresses or bodysuits.
There are precautions when using electric blankets and electromagnetic cookers (IH, etc.), which will be explained at the time of installation. Also, please let us know if you have sensitive skin.
Required time: About 20 minutes when installing About 10-15 minutes when removing

blood pressure plethysmography

Blood pressure is measured in both hands and feet to check for clogged blood vessels in the legs and the degree of arteriosclerosis.
If you have a dialysis shunt, be sure to let us know.
Required time 10-15 minutes

respiratory physiology

General pulmonary function test/Precise pulmonary function test

A mouthpiece is placed in your mouth, and lung function is checked by inhaling and exhaling.
It is performed as a screening test before diagnosing asthma and COPD and before surgery.
A precision pulmonary function test uses a test gas.In order to avoid the influence of gas, we will take a break during the inspection.
Avoid smoking and eating right before the test. Also, avoid wearing tight-fitting underwear or clothing.
Required time General pulmonary function test approx. 15-20 min Precision pulmonary function test approx. 60 min

Simple sleep apnea test

Check the presence and frequency of apnea and hypopnea during sleep.
On the first day, we will give you the test equipment, put it on yourself before going to bed, and return it the next day.We will explain how to put it on and how to use the equipment when you hand it over.
Time required (explanation time required) about 15 minutes

neurophysiological examination

EEG

Electrodes are attached to the scalp to record weak electric potentials coming out of the brain.Tests for headache, consciousness disorder, epilepsy, etc. Please wash your hands before the test.
Hair clips, earrings, earrings, wigs, etc. must be removed.
It is desirable to be able to record your sleep, so we recommend coming to the hospital with a lack of sleep.
Duration about 60 minutes

Nerve conduction velocity study

Mainly, peripheral nerves in the arms and legs are electrically stimulated to generate waves, and the speed and magnitude of the waves are used to determine the presence and severity of peripheral nerve damage.
It is roughly divided into motor nerve conduction velocity test and sensory nerve conduction test.
Please wash your hands before the test.
Duration about 60 minutes

Ultrasonography

Echocardiography (echocardiography)

Ultrasound is used to observe the shape and movement of the heart and evaluate the function of the heart.
Measure your blood pressure before the test.
Please wash your hands before the test.
Duration about 30 minutes

Vascular ultrasonography (vessel echo examination)

Carotid arteries, leg veins, leg arteries, renal arteries, etc. are observed to diagnose clogged blood vessels and arteriosclerosis.
Please wash your hands before the test
Duration about 30-60 minutes

Requests to patients

  • For scheduled examinations, please come to the hospital 30 minutes before the scheduled time and use the automatic follow-up reception machine.
  • If you have multiple tests on the same day, please pay attention to the appointment times.

Pathological examination department

Histopathological diagnosis

Microscopic specimens are prepared from specimens taken from living tissue or tissues from organs removed by surgery.
If necessary, special staining and immunostaining are performed and a pathologist diagnoses the pathology.
It also supports rapid diagnosis during surgery.

Cytology

Microscopic specimens are prepared from specimens collected from the living body (urine, sputum, body cavity fluid, organ scraping specimens, etc.), cells are observed, and cytologists and pathologists make diagnoses such as benign or malignant.

Dissection

In addition to pathological autopsies at Tsukuba Medical Center Hospital, the pathology department also handles judicial autopsies, administrative autopsies, and investigative autopsies, which are the duties of the Tsukuba Autopsy Center.

Health checkup department

All clinical examination departments are involved in the work of the Tsukuba General Health Checkup Center, striving to maintain the health and prevent disease of everyone in the community.
