Radiation therapy

1. What is radiation therapy?

It is one of the "three major cancer treatments" along with surgery and chemotherapy (anti-cancer drug treatment), and is a treatment that kills cancer cells by irradiating the lesion area with radiation.
Radiation therapy can be broadly divided into external radiation therapy and internal radiation therapy, both of which can treat cancer without surgery.
Radiation therapy is characterized by its low burden on the body and wide range of indications.Even if you irradiate radiation, you will not feel pain or heat.

2. Requests to patients

Our department is a complete reservation system.
If you would like to see a doctor, please make an appointment by phone before coming to the hospital.
Also, when you visit the hospital, please bring a letter of introduction with you.

4.Flow of treatment

There are two ways to start treatment.

  1. Performing the initial examination and preparation for treatment (CT imaging),Treatment to start at a later date.
It takes about 1 hour including waiting time.
  2. From the first examination, preparation for treatment (CT imaging) to treatment planning,Start treatment on the same dayTo do.
It takes about 2 hour including waiting time.

From the second time onwards, irradiation is performed as planned according to the marks on the skin.

  • The treatment will be completed while you are lying on your bed.
  • The sleeping time will be about 10 minutes for the first time, and the time after the second time will be shorter than the first time.

5.Treatment content

Our hospital provides both external and internal radiation therapy.

external radiation therapy

IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy), SRT (Stereotactic Radiation Therapy), SBRT (Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy), treatment under respiratory arrest, etc. are performed with high accuracy.
We also actively perform IGRT (image-guided radiation therapy) using kV (kilovolt)-X-rays.
IMRT is an irradiation method that changes the intensity of radiation using the latest technology, and it is possible to create a dose distribution that matches the shape of the lesion.
As a result, it is possible to concentrate the radiation dose on the lesion and reduce the radiation dose on the normal tissue.
We treat head, neck, vertebral body, lung, breast, prostate, extremities, etc.

internal radiation therapy

Treatment is performed using Xofigo® intravenous injection (radium chloride 223Ra).
Xofigo is a therapeutic radiopharmaceutical (injection) that has an anticancer effect against castration-resistant prostate cancer that has metastasized to the bone.
Like calcium, which is a component of bones, it tends to accumulate in bones, and is often transported to bone metastases of cancer where metabolism is active.
It is thought that the radiation called alpha rays hits that part, suppressing the growth of cancer cells that have metastasized to the bone.
