Gastrointestinal angiography

1. What is a gastrointestinal imaging test?

Gastrointestinal angiography is a general barium examination, in which barium sulfate and air are used to inflate the stomach and intestines, and the examination is performed under X-ray fluoroscopy.

2. Requests to patients

If you have any of the following, please let us know before the inspection.

  • Those with heart disease (especially angina pectoris and atrial fibrillation), glaucoma, and prostatic hyperplasia
⇒In some cases, antispasmodics cannot be used. Also, other medications may be used.
  • Those with limited daily activities
⇒Since it is necessary to change positions quickly during the examination, the examination will be performed with the assistance of the person in charge.
  • Those who are pregnant or may become pregnant
⇒Since the inspection will be performed using X-rays, the inspection may be canceled.
  • Those who are prone to aspiration during upper gastrointestinal imaging (those who often cough after eating or drinking water)
  • Those who have an additional artificial anus (stoma)
⇒In some cases, barium and air are injected through the stoma for examination.

About position change
In the gastrointestinal imaging examination, the examination is performed while changing the body position during the examination.
(reason)
Deposit barium across the intestinal wall
Shooting from various angles, etc.
We appreciate your cooperation in order to conduct a better inspection.

4.Inspection details

It is divided into two parts: the upper digestive tract (esophagus, stomach, duodenum, small intestine) and the lower digestive tract (large intestine).

Upper gastrointestinal imaging (stomach X-ray examination)

Diagnose lesions in the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, and small intestine.
(Inspection time: about 20 minutes)

  1. Pre-examination preparation

I have dietary restrictions prior to testing. This is because if food remains in the intestinal tract, it is difficult to distinguish it from lesions.
Please follow the precautions that will be explained at the time of the examination reservation and take pretreatment.

  2. Inspection method

Before the examination, a drug (antispasmodic) that suppresses gastrointestinal motility (peristalsis) and gastric juice secretion is administered by intramuscular injection.
During the examination, you will first drink a foaming agent and barium to inflate your stomach on an examination table.
Next, we will take pictures of the stomach and duodenum while changing the position repeatedly by lying on your back and lying on your stomach.

  3. After inspection

After the inspection, the barium and air will be expelled.
After the examination, the stool will turn white due to the influence of barium.
To prevent barium from solidifying in the intestine, please drink more water than usual after the examination.

Lower gastrointestinal contrast examination (enema X-ray examination)

The shape of the large intestine, mucosal lesions, compression of the large intestine by other organs, obstruction of passage, etc. are examined.
(Inspection time: about 20-30 minutes)

  1. Pre-examination preparation

Pretreatment is very important in the lower gastrointestinal tract (enema radiography).
The test is performed with an empty colon so that no stool remains in the colon.
Therefore, before the examination, you will be asked to take a bowel cleanser or examination food and take a laxative.
Please follow the precautions explained at the time of the examination reservation well and take pretreatment.

  2. Inspection method

You will wear an examination suit and special pants for the examination.
Before the examination, a drug (antispasmodic) is administered by intramuscular injection to suppress intestinal movement (peristalsis).
A thin test tube is inserted through the anus on an examination table, and air is injected to inflate the large intestine.
Images are taken from the rectum to the terminal ileum while changing the patient's posture.

  3. After inspection

After the examination, the stool will turn white due to the influence of barium.
At the end of the examination, as much barium and air as possible will be sucked, but in order to prevent the barium from solidifying in the intestines, please drink more water than usual after the examination. .
