- The story behind the birth of "The Garden of Spinning"
As the fundraising goal is reached, flowers will bloom in the flower beds. Please help us make the five flower beds bloom!
Greetings
Tsukuba Medical Center, Public Interest Foundation Representative Director Yasuo Shima
Please donate to help renovate the Spinning Garden!
The "Spinning Garden" was created on the pedestrian deck (pedestrian walkway) between Tsukuba Medical Center Hospital and Tsukuba General Health Center in 2009. Dr. Yoshitaka Nakata (former representative director, now deceased), who was saddened by the bleak scenery in front of the hospital entrance, submitted an application for the "Green Design Award" (Dai-ichi Life, Urban Greening Fund) and used the prize money to create the garden.
Since then, Tsukuba Medical Center and the NPO Tsukuba Urban Gardening (TUG) have worked together to plant flowers of every season in many flower beds, providing a peaceful place where patients and their families passing by the pedestrian deck can feel the change of seasons.
The garden is a place of relaxation for local residents who stop by to walk their dogs, for students commuting along the promenade, and for the children of the "Kodomo no Ie" nursery school.
However, 15 years have passed since the garden was created, and the benches and pergola (a lattice-like shelf in a garden) in the Spinning Garden have deteriorated and require repairs, and the 35 flower beds also require pruning and maintenance of the plants.
Renovating the Spinning Garden will require a large amount of money, and it would be difficult for our organization to do it alone. Our first goal is to raise approximately 1 million yen for the renovation costs, and our second goal is to cover the annual maintenance costs of the garden, which is approximately 300 million yen, to reach a total of 2 million yen.
For this reason, we would like to ask everyone who uses our hospitals and health checkup centers, as well as local residents, to make donations.
We appreciate your kind support.
Our organization participates in the "Adopt a Road" initiative run by Tsukuba City.
*What is Adapt-A-Load?
Becoming the "foster parent" of roads managed by Tsukuba CityThis is a program in which roads are viewed as "adopted children" and cared for with love (cleaning, weeding, etc.) as if they were our own children.

Renovation plan for the spinning garden
Maintenance of flower beds (35 units)
There are six two-tiered flower beds called "three-dimensional flower beds" and 2 single-tiered flower beds. The flower beds are replanted twice a year in cooperation with the NPO Tsukuba Urban Gardening (TUG) and its staff. In addition to the costs of flower seedlings and fertilizer, regular maintenance of the flower beds (weeding, etc.) is also outsourced, so there are costs for that as well.
Although we have been carrying out ongoing maintenance, there are many plants and tall trees that have grown so large that the outer edges of the flower beds can no longer be seen.
We will carry out maintenance of the entire spinning garden, focusing on plants that have grown beyond the flower beds (such as thyme) and the lawn, as well as pruning large trees (such as maiden apple trees and common carrot trees).
Renovation plan for benches (7 locations)
We will rebuild benches whose seats have corroded and cracked. We will restore dilapidated benches so that they are safe to sit on and reconstruct them into places of relaxation.
Pergola (2 locations) renovation plan
In early summer, star jasmine blooms on this pergola, providing shade and the scent of jasmine.
Over the years, the star jasmine and ivy have grown so thick that it is no longer possible to see where the entrance or exit is.
Currently, it is difficult to rest inside the pergola, so we will prune the plants and improve the uneven interior surface to make it easier for people in wheelchairs to enter and exit the pergola.
Installation of additional watering equipment
When watering the flower beds in front of the Tsukuba Medical Center Hospital and the Tsukuba General Health Check Center, the faucet is located at the edge, so the hose is extended and watered across the promenade. We are taking into consideration pedestrians and cyclists, but there are some places that are physically out of reach (we use a watering can, etc.), so we have difficulty watering.
To achieve this, we will install additional watering equipment so that all flower beds can be watered without crossing the promenade.
*This is the current renovation plan and may be subject to change without notice.

Mayor of Tsukuba City, Igarashi Tatsuo
Let's create a peaceful place together!
Thank you for registering with Tsukuba City's Adopt-A-Road program to help with the renovation of Tsumugi Garden. The Adopt-A-Road program aims to create a comfortable and beautiful road environment by working with residents and the city to clean, beautify, and green the roads, and ultimately encourage residents to feel more attached to the roads.
We hope that Tsukuba Medical Center, Tsukuba Urban Gardening, and volunteers will continue to decorate the pedestrian deck with flowers of every season, allowing patients and the many people passing by to feel the change of seasons.
The city of Tsukuba will do everything it can to support these wonderful activities so they can continue.
Let's work together to create a place of peace for many people!
Yurika Iguchi, Chairperson of the NPO Tsukuba Urban Gardening (TUG)
May the happy scenery continue forever.
The "Spinning Garden" in front of Tsukuba Medical Center Hospital (TMC) is full of flowers and now a bit of overgrown greenery.
In 2008, TMC, the University of Tsukuba, TUG and others developed a plan, which they submitted to the Green Design Award sponsored by the Urban Greening Fund and Dai-ichi Life Insurance, winning the award.
We received construction funds from the prize and built it. The reason for the selection was that "diverse parties are working together to regenerate the pedestrian deck (pedestrian walkway) of the Science City, which is important in the history of urban planning in Japan." In other words, it is a "spinning garden." What's wonderful is that it has not changed even after 16 years. It is supported by TMC, maintained by TUG gardeners, volunteers participate in planting flowers, and is a training site for students and a workplace for young people with disabilities. Making lavender sticks is a place of interaction between patients, volunteers, and the general public. I hope that such happy scenes will continue forever.
We received comments from the "NPO Tsukuba Urban Gardening Community Garden Flower Friends."
We are in charge of various tasks in the "Spinning Garden" as the "behind the scenes supporters". This garden was created by "spinning" the thoughts of many people who wanted to create a "soothing garden" for the local community and those who use the hospital. It is truly a "Spinning Garden". Every June, the lavender that blooms in the "Spinning Garden" is used to make lavender sticks together with everyone, and it also becomes a "community garden".
Flowers have the power to soothe and soothe people's hearts. We will continue to work together to ensure that the flowers blooming in this garden can bring even a little healing to everyone!
I hope that more and more people will learn about this garden and get involved in planting flowers, caring for it, and participating in events. (From a TUG gardener)

Bring new life to the Spinning Garden, a place of peace and healing!
We are extremely honored to have had the opportunity to support the renovation project of the "Tsumigi Garden." This garden is an important space that provides peace and healing to its visitors, and at the same time, it also holds great academic value. In the fields of environmental design and landscape architecture, pursuing harmony between nature and humans is an important theme.
In particular, the impact of horticultural therapy and community interaction on human psychological and physiological health is a very important research area. The renovation of the "Tsumigi Garden" can be a valuable field for demonstrating the effectiveness of these from both the perspectives of environmental design and health science. As a model case of sustainable design, we hope that new life will be breathed into this beautiful garden, and that it will continue to contribute to many people in both research and practice.
We sincerely hope that your generous donations will lead to the success of this project, deepen academic knowledge, and contribute to a broader range of society. We would appreciate your cooperation.

The flowers and trees in the Spinning Garden encouraged me!
I started working at Tsukuba Medical Center Hospital in 3, and for the past 30 years I have been trained as a nurse based on the hospital's philosophy.
In 14, my eldest son suffered from acute encephalopathy, and I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about the future. While I was visiting the hospital, the colorful flowers and trees of the "Tsugino Garden" caught my eye and I still remember the dazzling moment. I felt encouraged by the sparkling, bright, strength and beauty of life. Since then, I have participated in volunteer work at the "Tsugino Garden" and cooperate with planting activities, hoping to "reach the hearts of as many people as possible."
We hope that the support of many people for this renovation project will create a circle of support that will serve as bonds.
